ARE THERE NEGATIVE EFFECTS
|
Quality of conversation |
One of the many disadvantages that can arise from social media is quality of face to face conversation has gone down because of the presence of social media and cell phones. In the article “The Effect of Technology On Face-to-Face Communication” by Emily Drago, the article mentions a study that examined how the quality of conversation was in the presence of mobile devices. The author states “People who had conversation in the absence of mobile devices reported higher levels of empathetic concern, while those conversing in the presence of a mobile device reported lower level of empathy”(Drago). With the presence of cell phones and social media people are not having quality conversations and are disconnected compared to a face to face conversation without the presence of a cell phone or social media. Conversations in the presence of social media can also led to less meaningful relationships. How can you connect with someone if your too busy looking on Facebook then actually talking to them?

social media is a Distraction |
People can spend hours on social media, and can be a huge distraction especially for students. A lot of students multitask, maybe catch up on their shows while studying for an exam, or writing a paper. According to the NBC article “Students Can’t Resist Distraction for Two minutes… and Neither Can You” they mentioned a Larry Rosen, a professor who published a study about how students are distracted by technology and social media. The article states “Rosen's observers followed 263 students into their normal study environments — bedroom, library, den — and told them to work on an important school assignment for 15 minutes. Even knowing they were being watched, the students couldn't resist texting or using social media. So-called "on-task" behavior started declining at about the two minute mark, and overall, only 65 percent of the time was used on schoolwork”(Sullivan). It’s harder for students to keep a consistent train of thought while doing academic work because they get distracted by social media. With every social media site easily being accessed through your cell phones, people can easily get distracted. Many people will take a quick five minute break, but then that break turns into a fifty minute break.
